Food Tasting in the Cafeteria!
PTO has sponsored a healthy “Food Tasting” during lunchtime on November 22nd for grades K-5. This is the kick-off to a variety of events the Health, Wellness and Sustainability Committee would like to bring to the Chickering community - the awareness on healthy eating. Together with the Food Services Director, Janelle Madden and the Kitchen Manager, Stephanie Majkut and their staff, a table will be set up with a variety of local farm fresh produce and some exotic fruits and veggies including: apples (Macintosh, Macouns, and Cortland’s), pears, grapes, papaya, sweet red and orange peppers, sugar snap peas, jicama, zucchini, strawberries, and bananas. With the help of a few parent volunteers, the students will be invited to the table to sample small plates of these offerings. Their inputs will be tallied and presented on a poster. We hope this information can help food services explore the acceptance of new “healthier" items that could replace some current offerings. All standard food safety procedures will be followed. In addition, Janelle has requested a list of students with food allergies to the raw produce from Nurse Marcy Buguajski to be reviewed by the staff prior to this event . All the cafeteria staff have received their CPR refresher course and are trained with administering epi-pens and handling choking.
We need volunteers to help too! Sign up under the Volunteer Section for your child's lunch time!
