Library Volunteers Keep Things Orderly
A, then B, then C, then D... Alphabetical order. It seems so simple,
right? But imagine a library as stocked and thorough as Chickering's, and
then imagine 513 elementary school kids who love to read. Makes you wonder
how the library remains in such remarkable condition.
Well, the big answer is that we have two of the state's most talented school
librarians, Cheryl Chase and Winnie Green. They know each student, each
book, each shelf, and they are professionals who keep our library at the
cutting edge. But they are aided in their work by a team of Library
Shelving Volunteers organized by the PTO.
This year's Library Volunteer Coordinator, Angela Ahn, is managing a group of sixteen
parents who spend an hour or two every month putting books back on the right
shelf so our kids can find them. "It is a volunteer task that is very
meaningful to parents," said Angela. "We can accommodate less than twenty
slots on the schedule and many of those have been Library Volunteers in the
past. It's very popular, and volunteers who have done it like to come
back."
Angela also organizes about two dozen volunteer parents from Kindergarten classrooms
who come in to assist with weekly trips to the library. Those slots filled faster than a Kindergartener
can sing the ABC's. So if you're looking for other ways to volunteer click on the word Volunteer on the
top navigation bar on the home page and all the opportunities will show!
